The trip to The Drottningholm Palace -Yamini

29th April 2017

We packed our lunch from home and as always we met everyone at T-Central station so that we could catch a boat to The Drottningholm slott. The trip to The Drottningholm Palace via ferry was about 60 minutes duration,so we just sat back and enjoyed the landscapes and stunning views and let cold wind not bother us. The royal palace stands on an island in lake Mälar is one of the Sweden's best preserved Royal palaces and is served as private Royal Residency to the Swedish Royal family. There is a Opera House located at the Palace and is still in use,Wow! One of  the main tourist attractions are the parks and gardens surrounding the Palace. Together we ate our lunch facing the castle in a garden cafe bearing cold and windy weather which was a perfect sitting for lunch with friends.

Harbour Day... Day of Lessons

27th April 2017

Sweden is a beautiful country, a land which fulfilled many of our dreams. The capital of Sweden is Stockholm. Stockholm is also the Capital of Scandinavia. It is country rich in art and music.

After the first fun filled days today, we have a day full of lessons. It disappointed me as the word " lessons" doesn't give a good vibe. First impressions can be wrong and I am happy I was proved wrong. As I continued reading the schedule for the day, the word "boat ride" caught my eye and this made me all excited and set for the day ahead.

All meet up at Stockholm central also known as the T- Centralum at 8:30 am.

We are then taken to visit a company at the harbour. The company is called “ Vartahamnen”. We enjoy the traditional Swedish Fika before beginning the session. The lecture consisted talks on the port and its future plans like the environmental goals and onshore power supply. It was an interactive session with complex topics like waste discharge and sky walk explained through presentations and videos.

After the talk, we all head towards the boat. The one thing we all were looking forward to that was the boat trip. It felt cold out on the deck with the wind blowing hard on our faces.

This is followed by lunch at Bromma. We are divided into two groups for our following schedule which included attending lessons.  My group in charge was Martin Martinkov was first led us to class where an English lecture was going on. The class was divided 5 groups and we were told to join each group. It was a fun time as we interacted and each one wanted to know about culture and traditions of respective countries.

The next lecture was in art class where the art teacher showed her students how to use photoshop. She began the lecture by explaining the impact small details have on art. She further quoted " Small details make big difference". The other group led by Axel Svennson first attended economic class and later basketball  training.

In the evening, we along with two of our faculty members, Mr Ashok Dange and Mr Andrew Barreto go to Globen city for the Ice hockey match .The match was between Sweden and Russia where Sweden beat Russia 4-0.

After the fun filled day and nail biting match all returned to their respective houses with their host.

ICE SKATING  - Sasha Fernandes

25th of April finally arrived! It was one of the days that everyone was looking forward to. Our dream of ice skating would finally be realised.
When we reached the skating rink, we saw some people skating. Seeing them glide with ease, we felt ,oh how easy and simple. But believe me, reality was a different story.
I was really excited about ice skating because it had been on my wish list since I was very young. All excited, we geared ourselves with skating shoes and headgear.
I was the first to get ready and step on the skating rink. All attention turned to me. Everyone expected me to fall as soon as they saw me on the rink. I had to be careful; I did not want to be the first to make a fool of myself. The ice was very slippery.  But miracles do happen and within a few minutes, I could skate without any help. Even our fellow Swedish students were amazed since they had fallen so many times when they had first stepped onto the ice.
It was a marvellous experience to skate with ease whereas my friends struggled to keep balance. It was a funny sight to see my teachers fall while trying to skate!! I felt like I had conquered the world when at the end of our skating session I had not fallen down even once.

This day proved to be enjoyable, funny and exciting. It will remain to be a day that shall be cherished every time we look back at these memories.

An Unplanne Adventure

Sreetam Halder

It was 27th of April, and all the natural science students were excited as we had an overnight stay on the island of Fjärdlång.
We started our day by collecting the water samples from three different water bodies. Next, we had dinner at 5.30 p.m. We had pasta with sauce, meat balls  and falafel, which were all very delicious.
The dinner was followed by hiking to the highest point on the island but it was fun since we had a kind of quiz along the way through the woods.
Finally, when we reached to our destination, it was an amazing scenic view, one of the best we’d ever seen. We took some photographs, including group and individual selfies.
But what happened while we were returning from the mountains was a mystery. The 5 of us including one of our professors, got lost in the woods. We took a wrong turn at some point and started heading in the opposite direction. It got pretty dark and we had no idea where to go, despite having GPS.
It was only because of Sachin Sir, our professor, that we had confidence that we could get out of the woods. We thought of calling Arild, and it did help us (thanks to our smartphones). It took Arild just 15 minutes to find us, but it was dark and it took us almost 2 hours to get out of that forest. We were tripped and fell a lot since the rocks were very slippery and we passed from the barbed wires too. At last, we made it back to the house. It was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
We all were positive about it, as we know life is all about taking the next step. We’d conquered this adventure.

24 April 2017- Jayashree Sanzgiri

I woke up early, got dressed and went down to have breakfast. After breakfast, Gwyneth, her mother and I left for Tullinge Gymnasium. Even though I was wearing 2 jackets, a scarf, a beanie and gloves, I felt very cold. The temperature ranged from 2-9 degree Celsius and it was drizzling sporadically, interspersed with snow sometimes (called slush since it’s like a slushie), which according to Gwyneth is the worst kind of rain. We drove to the train station and arrived Tullinge station from were we walked for a half hour to the gymnasium. Once we arrived, Gwyneth showed me around the gymnasium. There were 5 buildings or houses; different streams had their classes in different houses. All of us met in one of the houses and then, there was a short introduction about the programme planned for us, given by Arild Lagerkvist. In the lecture, he stressed on how punctuality is very important in Sweden, and how, if we are even a minute or even seconds late, we could miss out on the programme planned for us. The lecture was followed by another lecture on Swedish society by Malin Jung. In it, she talked about collectivism and individualism, religion, and the controversial topic of migration. We found out that all education is free for the students since it’s funded by the government, and how society was becoming more individualistic and less collective. The controversy of migration and asylum in Sweden was also discussed. After that, we had another lecture on the Swedish healthcare system by Eva Lederberg. She spoke of how the disabled are helped by the state to lead as normal a life as possible. We then proceeded to the lunch room to eat. The food was quite tasty, and we were surprised since everyone has told us it’d be quite bland. After lunch, we went to 2 institutions that took care of the disabled. The first place was kind of like a home for the disabled. There were caretakers who took different shifts. Everything was colour- coordinated to make it easier for its residents. We were shown different rooms where the residents lived, a common area, bathrooms, the kitchen and dining area, the pantry and even a backyard which had a pool and a bike. The house was split into two parts: one part consisted of rooms for people who had limited motor skills and the other was for people with normal motor skills. The former had various features, like a special machine that could move a person around the room, since it’s important for them to move and not be confined to a wheelchair. Sasha tried it out, and she also tried out a blanket which was stuffed with plastic balls, and according to her, it felt like you were getting a gigantic hug. We then went out into the backyard, and some of us took turns in riding the bike. We ended the tour by eating the cookies and drinking the coffee laid out for us. Next, we headed for the other institution in Tumba, which was funded by the government. It had seven workers or caretakers with various backgrounds in medicine, nursing and others. The people staying or visiting here were more of those who had brain trauma or neurodegenerative disorders like Alzhimer’s. They showed us the various handicrafts made by these people, which included paintings, crafts and glasswork, which looked very cool. We met Iver, who made really amazing glasswork. We ended this tour by a demonstration of musical therapy, in which we all participated. It was pretty fun. We then headed back to the bus which dropped us off at Tullinge by 4 p.m. and proceeded to drop the rest of the students at Bromma. It was raining slush, and was incredibly cold. Gwyneth found me and we headed to the bus stop, caught a bus which took us to the station where we boarded the train which took us home. Gwyneth had a flute lesson in Salem at 6:30 p.m. and came back by 7. We had dinner by 7:30 p.m. and then played some Swedish board games, which were quite fun. At around 9:15, I went to bed exhausted, and fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
